Range Anxiety - What is it and how do you cure it?

Range anxiety, a familiar term to many of us, has undergone a noticeable change in recent years. With the significant growth of electric cars becoming an increasingly common sight on our roads, our fear of being stranded with a depleted battery has gradually diminished.

Overcoming Range Anxiety

When it comes to curing range anxiety, it’s important to understand our daily travel patterns. According to Maria Swedin, COO at Waybler, it’s easy to overestimate our need for long journeys. In reality, we only drive an average of 3–5 miles per day. With today’s electric cars offering a range of 20–40 miles, it becomes clear that our everyday trips no longer need to be a source of concern. Furthermore, with a growing infrastructure of fast-charging stations around the country, longer trips become safer from a range and convenience perspective, as many public fast-charging locations also offer opportunities to eat, visit a restroom, or a playground for the kids.

Tips for Curing Range Anxiety:

Know your travel habits: By understanding your daily travel patterns and needs, you can estimate the actual range you require; for most people, home charging combined with today’s electric cars with good battery capacity is more than sufficient.

Plan your journey: By using apps and map services, you can easily plan your journey and find nearby charging stations along the way to reduce the fear of being stranded when embarking on longer trips.

Utilize the charging infrastructure: With a growing number of fast-charging stations around the country, it’s becoming increasingly easier to charge your electric car in no time, reducing the need to worry about long charging breaks. Instead, take the opportunity to have a meal, visit a restroom, or let the kids play. Sometimes, a break is a welcome interruption in the journey.

Build your confidence gradually: Take small steps by starting with shorter trips and gradually increasing your confidence with the range of the electric car. Sooner than you think, you’ll have the same awareness of your range as you did with a traditional fuel gauge in a fossil car.

Good luck with your electric car driving – we’re sure you’ll have many wonderful moments out on the roads!
