The City of Stockholm has a vision to improve the mobility of the city for pedestrians, cyclists and new mobile transport services. At the same time, more and more people are moving in the inner city, making mobility crucial for the vision to become reality. This is a question of how sustainable parking garages lead to better mobility in the inner city of Stockholm.

Stockholm is going to meet a car-free future. This is facilitated by establishing more alternative transport services. The advantage of using other means of transportation is many, both in terms of efficiency and price. In our neighboring Finland, Transport as a Service (TaaS) service Whim has been introduced on the market and offers its customers travel proposals from door to door in the fastest possible way. To travel time-efficient from door to door, you need to be open to use electric bicycles, tuk-tuk taxis or perhaps hanging out with a stranger.

The target group for these new TaaS services in Sweden is big, as Swedes are generally referred to as early adopters and are at the forefront when it comes to hoping for new solutions and services. But these new transport services will require more space on and around the streets. By significantly reducing street parking, better walkability creates more space for a growing population and for new transport services to conduct their business.

Stockholm City should aim to ensure that all cars currently parked in the inner city are referred to entry parking outside the city center, while simultaneously proposing alternative transport solutions to shuttle passengers. Alternatively, the drivers are referred to parking garages below or above ground. These parking spaces, at the sidewalks and the garage, also provide a natural place to charge electric cars. An increasing number of Swedes are considering buying electric vehicles and growth is expected to rise sharply in the coming years. By 2030, it is expected that about 150,000-200,000 electric cars will be run in Stockholm, but today there are many waiting to get an electric car because there is no capacity for charging.

The possibility of charging the electric car has unfortunately become a bottleneck in the conversion to a fossil-free fleet. Today’s debate shows insufficient knowledge of charge infrastructure and if the power grid’s capacity is able to handle the anticipated electricity car growth. The solutions presented to date require a strengthening of existing power grids and, in the long term, the establishment of new power stations. This would in turn lead to increased costs for society, a worse rotation in the inner city and ultimately to increased difficulties in offering electric cargo charging to the large mass.

In order to promote mobility in the inner city and enable large-scale electricity cargo charging, the focus should be on upgrading entry car parks and garages to charging stations meeting the daily need for charging. Tomorrow’s debate should be about how we power balance the power in the smartest way and how we charge at least 30-40 cars at a time cost-effective.
